James Alexander Maynard FRS ( 1987 ) is an English mathematician working in analytic number theory and in particular the theory of prime numbers. In 2017, he was appointed Research Professor at Oxford. Maynard is a fellow of St John's College, Oxford. He was awarded the Fields Medal in 2022 and the New Horizons in Mathematics Prize in 2023.Here there is a description of James' scientific contributions so far:1 - Primes in Short IntervalsMaynard's research in the distribution of prime numbers in short intervals challenges the traditional understanding of how densely prime numbers can populate segments of the number line, even in very short intervals. By improving the techniques for estimating the density of primes in these intervals, Maynard has provided a clearer picture of the irregular, nature of prime distribution. This work is crucial for advancing cryptographic algorithms which often rely on the properties of primes.2 - Bounded Gaps Between PrimesOne of Maynard's most notable contributions is his work on bounded gaps between primes. Following on the heels of Yitang Zhang's groundbreaking results, Maynard introduced new methods that significantly lowered the upper bound on the gaps between consecutive primes. His approach involved a more flexible use of what’s known in mathematics as “admissible tuples” to capture more potential prime occurrences. This achievement not only pushed the boundaries of existing mathematical theory but also opened up new pathways for further reducing these gaps.3 - Polynomial Configurations in the PrimesBuilding on the work of Ben Green and Terence Tao, who demonstrated that the prime numbers contain arbitrarily long arithmetic progressions, Maynard's research extends these concepts to more complex polynomial configurations.
